- Surface Pitting: Run your fingernail across barrels, slides, optic housings, and metal surfaces. Any pits or deep roughness means moisture has already breached the finish.
- Optics & Seals: Look through scopes, red dots, and binoculars in bright light. Internal haze, fogging, or brittle rubber gaskets signal seal failure.
Golden Rule: If you have to ask “Is this still safe and reliable?”, the answer is no. Move questionable items to low-stakes training use or retire them. Never bet your life on compromised gear.
